  my husbands cousin lives in a small rural area in illinois and over the weekend crop circles appeared in their soybean crop .

  i just talked to his cousin , and she is beside herself from all the publicity .

  she said the phone started ringing at 6am this morning .

  Big Dog, are you proposing that we throw away the scientific method? If so, what would you replace it with? How do you suggest we evaluate claims made by others?

  Not at all, the scientific method is invaluable for the advancement of our knowledge. What I chuckle about here is that there is no conclusive evidence either way as to the source of every crop circle, their origins haven't been subjected to the rigourous investigation and peer review you champion. Yet the hard science folks are convinced that every crop circle ever formed was made by a couple of fellows (or gals) with some rope and and board. That hasn't been proven either beyond a shadow of a doubt yet by God it must be so because it couldn't possibly be anything else we don't understand that could have done it. That is the analogy of the old saw in science of, well, we can't explain it now, but someday we will be able to. Fine, when someday comes and you have it nailed down, then explain in, until then your conjecture holds as much weight as the alien argument.

  Interesting theory of group think writ large, or life imitating literature. A book is written and men spend the next couple thousand years acting it out, sounds like an excellent premise for a novel.

  Now, all we need is for someone to write a new book with a much happier ending.

  For each Einstein there are a million cranks. Your opinion is, because one in a million does know what he's on about, we have to believe everyone?

  No, that's not the point, the point is that "credentials" are not the be all and end all as was implied above. Who are these people, what have they published, etc. etc. There are plenty of published scientists that are nothing more than parasites making their reputation off the backs of their grad students and collegues. Yes, I put credence in credentials, but not to the point where I would out of hand discount an idea just because it wasn't put forth by someone with alphabet soup after their name.

  Big Dog - 'totally yammering' - have I touched a nerve? Not at all, I just get a kick out of listening to people pontificate. I have plenty of clients that are doctors who love to expound on the science of medicine, until the latest discovery comes along and they have to reverse themselves. Oh, yes, ahem, er, we used to believe that but now we KNOW it to be thus. I just find it humorous at how little we really know about anything. I was in a surgeon's office the other day and I picked up some materials left by a drug rep, way down at the end in the fine print it said that the drug company wasn't sure exactly how the drug did what it did and so on. I find the science fantatics as funny as the religious fanatics because really by the geological clock we have barely swung down from the trees and we really know next to nothing about how the universe works.

  I thought I had read that some of the circles had elements that were hard to reconcile as was pointed out. I could see some natural phenomena that could cause something like that to happen, I thought the snowflake example was a good one. When people start totally yammering about who is this person and what are their credentials I always think of the famous quote that goes "What does a patent clerk in Switzerland know about the physics of light?"

  What Music WERE You Allowed To Listen To?

  ok, so we've talked before about music which was not permitted in our families, leaving us to listen to .... what?

  most people in my congregation generally approved of olivia newton-john, but became suspicious of her work after grease, when she bacame a "bad" girl.

  one song "landslide" contained the lines "minor desires became major needs, my needs won't be denied", which was taken as proof that she had gone over to the "dark side".

  The only thing my parents were really concerned with were movies, they kept a pretty tight riegn on what I watched, but books and music they never paid much attention to.

  we actually spoke our mind to anyone and everyone about what we really think.......what would happen?.

  would you lose your family, friends, job etc ??.
